Fabulous Adolescent Literature: Countdown by Deborah Wiles (2010)

Social Science, English, and Science "people"

I just finished a fabulous new book about the 1960's in America: Countdown (2010) by Deborah Wiles. It infuses the story of an adolescent girl with the culture of US in the 60's and uses actual pictures of media and things like the "Fallout Shelter Handbook" of the day. Fascinating look at culture, social sciences, and science (a lot of text on the atom).

The pictures and constant thread of "duck and cover" text are the compelling parts of this book. I really enjoyed learning about this era of the USA, which occurred right before I was born. Somehow I missed learning about the seriousness of the Cuban Missile Crisis. This book beautifully portrays the emotion and perspective of a young girl and her family during the 1960s.
